Leiris was a part of the Surrealist scene in Paris and worked closely with Georges Bataille. He later became a leading ethnographer. Originally published in France as L'Age d'Homme, Manhood "traces the beginnings of his character deep into the sexual and emotional fantasies of his childhood."
