London: John Rodker, 1927. Translated by R. C. M. Cloth covered boards. Octavo; 270 pp. First English translation of The Story of Sara, taken from the autobiographical novel M. Nicolas, or the Human Heart Unveiled, originally self-published in the 1790s. This edition is #120 of a limited run of 1,000, printed on hand-made all rag Auvergne paper. Due to the nature of the paper making process, the pages can be uneven or show wrinkles. Pages are clean and unmarked, edges show minimal spotting. Boards in good condition, showing some slight wear and bumped corners on the rear board. Dust jacket in protective mylar shows little damage, most notably a small tear in the spine crease on the top front panel.
Also known as Rétif, Bretonne was a proflic French writer, authoring around 200 volumes, most of them self printed. The term for shoe fetishim, retifism, is named after him. He and de Sade hated each other and he was an early advocate of communism. Good+ / Very good+. Item #58
